Emergency services are racing to the scene after a SpaceX rocket exploded while on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen from several miles away shortly before 9am after fire broke out during a static test.

The multi-million dollar private American aerospace manufacturer company was set to launch a 'recycled' rocket this afternoon.

Nasa said space exploration and technologies firm SpaceX was conducting a test firing of its unmanned rocket when the blast occurred on Thursday morning (local time).

Witnesses said the blast shook buildings for miles around and multiple explosions continued for several minutes.

Additional details were not immediately available, but sirens could be heard in the aftermath as a cloud of dark smoke filled the overcast sky.

Cocaine with a street value of up to 50 million euros (£42m) has been discovered at a Coca-Cola plant in France.

Cocaine with a street value of up to 50 million euros (£42m) has been discovered at a Coca-Cola plant in France.
The drug, hidden in bags among a delivery of orange juice concentrate, arrived in a container from South America.
An investigation is under way in Signes, a village in southern France.
The seizure of 370kg of cocaine makes it one of the largest finds on French soil.
The prosecutor of Toulon, Xavier Tarabeux, said the delivery "has a street value of 50 million euros" and referred to it as "a very bad surprise".
Employees at the Coca-Cola plant have been ruled out of any involvement as investigators attempt to trace the origin of the drug.
"The first elements of the investigation have shown that employees are in no way involved," Jean-Denis Malgras, the regional president of Coca-Cola, told local news website Var-Matin.
The original Coca-Cola formula, created in 1886 by US pharmacist John Pemberton, is believed to have contained traces of cocaine derived from coca leaf extract.

The last big seizure of cocaine involving French authorities was in April 2015, when French customs officers aided in the arrest of two men caught trying to sail a yacht loaded with 250kg of the drug to the UK.
The SY Hygeia of Halsa was boarded off Martinique and found to be carrying cocaine with a street value of some £40m.

Militants Launch "Operation Crocodile Tears", Blow Another Oil Facility In Delta

Militants Launch "Operation Crocodile Tears", Blow Another Oil Facility In Delta

*Launches “Operation Crocodile Tears”

*Serves notice on Warri, Port-Harcourt Refineries, Otorogun Gas Plant, others

UGHELLI- DESPITE the ongoing military “Operation Crocodile Smile” in the Niger Delta region, an Urhobo militant group, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Movement, NDGJM, in the early hours of today, blew up the Ogor-Oteri major delivery line, operated by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company and Shorelines Petroleum in the state. The group in a statement by its leader,

“Gen” Aldo Agbalaja, in a statement, claiming responsibility for the attack at about 3.00 hours, said it was executed by its Uproot Team B, said the group was also launching “Operation Crocodile Tears” since the military had launched “Operation Crocodile Smile” to supposedly worsen the Niger Delta crisis. It said: “Recent developments around our region, especially as it concerns the issue of justice and our inalienable right to protect our heritage, have proven us right all along. Now it has become clearer who is serious about getting justice for our people and who has been using the name of the region and the destinies of all our peoples to feather their nests, raising dusts merely to harass the Nigerian state and the oil multinationals into parting with money.”

“Although some selfish machinery, merely put together to achieve some pecuniary ends, has been parading in the name of the peoples of the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate will not be derailed on its mission to getting justice for the people.” . The group said those who want to join the self acclaimed leaders of the region to make quick money in the arrangement they had put together were free to do so, but it lacked confidence in the show they put together, calling it a pan Niger Delta initiative. It said those people could speak for Ijaw nation, but certainly not all the nations in the region, adding: “When lines are blurred, justice is most likely to be miscarried. If there shall be a negotiation, it must be seen and indeed, must be in actual sense, be representing all the individual nations of the region equally.”

The group added: “The drama that trailed the visit of some Ijaw royal fathers to the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, in Abuja recently is more reason why equity must be a factor in setting up a body that will dialogue on behalf of all the peoples of the Niger Delta.” “If the said leader could not respect the royal fathers of his ethnic nation, if he is lording his will over them, what chance do other nations have, which do not have adequate representation? “That said, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate will no longer sit quietly watching the endless harassment of our people in various parts of the region by the Nigerian military. We had once warned against the victimization and harassment of defenseless people of the region, especially in the creeks, but rather than heed, the Nigerian military has increased its presence and made life more difficult for our people. “They are now killing our people on the basis of mere suspicion, this cannot continue,” it vowed.

Its words “With the launch of their ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate is also serving a notice on the commencement of our ‘Operation Crocodile Tears.’ It shall from now on be an eye for an eye; for every military atrocity carried out in the creeks and hinterland of the Niger Delta, the Nigerian armed forces will have the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate to contend with.” “To this end, we are alerting all those working in the UQCC/UPS Erhomukokwarien in Ughelli, Eriemu Pigging Manifold in Agbarha, Otorogun Gas Plant, Olomoro Flow Station, Warri Refinery, Port Harcourt Refinery, Eleme, OB-OB and Obite gas plants in Omoku to evacuate because what is coming to those facilities are beyond what anybody has seen before.

“We do not want innocent blood being spilled, therefore, we advise all indigenes living in the vicinities of the facilities to relocate for the time being. “The world should, however, note that the bloodbath that is about to commence in our already beaten, battered, squeezed and impoverished homeland, the Niger Delta. It is all the baby of the Nigerian government; they are the people, who are in one breath preaching resolution through dialogue and also breathing bullets and bombs on a troubled, but trusting people. “Hold the Nigerian President responsible for the genocide that his armed forces is about to unleash on our people,” Agbalaja said.

PDP Moves Convention To New Venue As Police Seals Off Convention Venue

Following the early morning seal-up of the Sharks Stadium, venue of today's repeat national convention of the PDP by security agencies, the convention has now been moved to the Adokiye Amasiemeka
stadium, Omagwa, Rivers State in defiant of the earlier police action.
This was agreed just now after an emergency meeting held at the presidential hotel port harcourt.

The much anticipated national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scheduled to hold today (Wednesday), may not take place at its venue, as the Sharks Football Club Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when the convention is to hold has been sealed off by security agencies.

Feelers had it late Tuesday night that the convention may be a fruitless effort as some factional members within the party had disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune that the security agencies would take over the venue.

The main gate leading to the state Government House, along the Azikwe Road axis, was relative free as at 8:30 am as there was no heavy security presence, though an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was seen packed closed to the gate.

The same cannot however, be said of Moscow Road/State Secretariat junction leading to the venue of the convention as there was heavy security presence at the axis.

The heavily armed combined team of MOPOL and regular police was seen conducting stop-and-search on motorists, even as they were prevented from accessing the road leading to the convention ground.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, there are indications that the PDP leadership was considering the possibility of shifting the national convention to another venue.

A source told Nigerian Tribune that the various caucuses of the party were in a meeting at the state Government House where a decision would taken on where the convention can possibly be held.

In a related development, three of the PDP national chairmanship contestants, Professor Tunde Adeniran, Chief Bode George and Dr Raymond Dokpesi, would be addressing a press conference on developments around the convention.

A source disclosed that the trio were alleging plans by Governor Nyesom Wike and his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayo Fayose, to skew the outcome of the convention in favour of another contestant from the South-West, Jimi Agbaje.

“The essence of the press conference is to let the world know that there is a grand scheme to rig the chairmanship election in the convention in favour of Agbaje”, the source said.

However, Governors Wike and Fayose had denied the allegation, on Tuesday, saying they would not be a party to any attempt to thwart the democratic process.

Military Kills 114 Militants In Ogun And Lagos Creeks

At least 114 militants are feared killed and scores of others injured in attacks on their camps in Ogun and Lagos states.
The attacks by the Army, Air Force and Navy, began on Thursday night under the operation “Crocodile Laugh” in readiness for a confrontation with militants in the Niger Delta.
The Director of Defence Information, Brig Gen Rabe Abubakar, confirmed the operation.
He said it was conducted to flush out militants and saboteurs from the area.
The attacks reportedly sent the local residents scampering, but they have been assured of safety and advised against sheltering any of the fleeing militants.
The creeks in Lagos and Ogun states recently became a safe haven and operational hideout for militants from Niger Delta.
Besides oil pipeline vandalism and petroleum theft in Arepo in Ogun State and parts of Lagos, the militants have been attacking innocent residents and stealing from them.
Military analysts say the dislodgment of the militants was carried out to drive them back to the Niger Delta where a full scale attack was imminent.

Militants have in the last three months inflicted massive damage on the economy through the destruction of gas and crude oil pipelines.
Lagos police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos also confirmed the operation in a statement released early Friday.
“We are sweeping through the waterways where we share boundaries with Niger Delta to end the activities of the militants,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Bayelsa, Mr Seriaki Dickson, met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday to ask for more time to initiate dialogue with the rampaging militants.
The Niger Delta Avengers have refused entreaties from government and have insisted on autonomy for the region or complete control of crude oil.
The Avengers, who emerged in May 2016, did not give the new government prior notice before embarking on massive destructions of oil and gas infrastructure. They have also resorted to killing and kidnapping of security personnel.

Finally, Ribadu returns to APC

Former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Friday, said he has returned to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that he took the decision as  “as a loyal party man.” Ribadu He said: “Today I heeded the calls on me to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party of which I was a founding member,” he said in a statement. “I re-registered as a member of the APC last night through the party’s online portal. After that, the leadership of the party in my Bako ward of Yola South Local Government Area visited me in my Yola residence to welcome me back to their fold. “This afternoon, I visited the Yola South secretariat of the party to present myself and submit to the leadership as a loyal party man. My decision to return to the APC was triggered by my belief that all politics are local. “Almost everyone around me, and with whom we started my political journey believed the time had come for us to make sacrifices and make concessions. That is in addition to the unbelievable love that my friends in the APC have showered on me in the past months. “They demonstrated in words and action that they wanted me back home. The intractable crises in the PDP also made it impossible for one to contribute to the necessary task of building a viable opposition platform for our country. “I also did a deep and long reassessment of the circumstances that warranted my exit from the APC in the first place. I left the APC in 2014 owing to fundamental disagreements with the ways the chapter of the party in my state was run after it fell into some hands. “Some colleagues and I tried hard to reposition the fold and save the then APC administration from an orchestrated impeachment plot. We didn’t succeed. “Events in the last 15 months have addressed many of the issues and healed some of the wounds. More so, with the genuine and sincere invitations I received since last year to retrace my steps into the party, I decided to return after consulting family and political associates at all levels. “I would like to appreciate all those members of the party who privately and publicly prodded me to return to the party. My appreciation also goes to the leadership of our party, from my ward in Bako to the national leadership, for the enthusiasm they showed in having me back.”

Aisha Buhari sues Gov. Fayose

Reports from Premium Times suggest President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, has sued Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State for claiming that she was involved in the Halliburton corruption scandal.
Mr. Fayose had in June said Mrs. Buhari was the “Aisha Buhari” named in a U.S. court document, alleged to have been involved in a bribery case involving a convicted former U.S. lawmaker, Williams Jefferson.
The governor, in what appeared to be an error, referred to the scandal as the Halliburton corruption case. The Halliburton case is different from the Williams Jefferson scandal.
But Mr. Fayose insisted he was right despite Mrs. Buhari’s denial and threat of legal action,
The court summons, dated July 20, 2016, was exclusively made available to PREMIUM TIMES.
As governor, Mr. Fayose has constitutional immunity against criminal prosecution.

PRESIDENT BUHARI COMMENDS U.S HISTORIC ROLE IN DEEPENING DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA

PRESIDENT BUHARI COMMENDS U.S HISTORIC ROLE IN DEEPENING DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA
President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja expressed appreciation for the important role the United States Government played in the success of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria.
Receiving the outgoing Ambassador of the U.S, Mr James Entwistle, at the State House, President Buhari said the U.S insistence on free, fair and violent-free elections largely contributed to the deepening of democracy in the country.
``The U.S support before, during and after the 2015 elections was vital to Nigeria’s stability and I will never forget the role they played in the stability of Nigeria.
``We were lucky to have had an INEC Chairman who was competent and courageous.
``Mr Ambassador, you occupied a position at a very strategic time in Nigeria’s history and I hope our historians will record this because it meant so much for our stability.
``I hope you write a book on your experience in Nigeria. The commitment of U.S in supporting Nigeria has been unprecedented, ’’ the President told the outgoing U.S envoy.
President Buhari also thanked the Americans for their military, intelligence and humanitarian support to Nigeria on the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency.
He said Nigeria also valued U.S contributions to promoting regional peace and stability through the instrumentality of the G7.
President Buhari also received in audience the outgoing High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Ambassador Perry Calderwood.
The President commended the Government of Canada’s humanitarian assistance to Nigerians displaced by the insurgency in the North East, and their commitment to polio eradication in the country.
He highlighted the Federal Government’s effort to facilitate voluntary return of displaced persons in addition to ensuring that conditions in North-eastern Nigeria improve significantly before the next farming season.
In their separate remarks, Ambassadors Entwistle and Calderwood had expressed concern on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the North East with looming reports of food crisis and malnutrition.
Entwistle said the bilateral relationship between both countries had remained very vibrant and cordial.
``I had a marvellous three-and-half years in Nigeria and I am grateful to have been involved in the memorable elections in 2015,’’ he said.
On his part, Calderwood conveyed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s desire to strengthen ties with Nigeria in Canada’s quest for partnership on international engagements, including its bid for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council, 2021-2022.

Buhari Talks APC Leaders to Appeal to Militants.

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to help him pacify rampaging militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Lamenting the effect of attacks on oil installations, the president said the country does not need such a distraction at this point in time.

He said the militants were in possession of sophisticated equipment, adding that unlike the Boko Haram sect which has one faction, the militants are in so many groups, suggesting that government has been having challenges relating with them.

Buhari was speaking on Friday, at the breaking of fast dinner with the APC leadership at the presidential villa in Abuja.

“I honestly don’t know how many factions the militants are in the Niger Delta compared to the north-east where you have the Boko Haram,” he said.

“The technology being deployed by the militants to destroy oil installations is high-tech, the way they can go on high sea and international waters and target oil installations is a national problem. It is affecting development.

“No insurance company will want to insure installations that will end up being blown up and no banks will want to finance such installations.

“Those of you who have friends among the leadership or even the militants themselves should plead with them in the name of God ‎Almighty to take it easy.

“We are in a very difficult time, so we have to organise ourselves. Anybody that says he has any other country than Nigeria should go out and see.”

He expressed delight that the primary election in Edo state was successful, and said close attention would be paid to Ondo state, which is next in line.

“The successful conduct of APC primaries in Edo state gave me a new hope,” he said.

“We are going to watch Ondo very closely, we have to ensure that the vote of the people count.”

John Oyegun, national chairman of the party, said the APC was pleased with the achievements of the president so far.

Oyegun, who acknowledged that Nigeria was passing through a difficult time, said “change does not come cheap or easily”.

“Things must change. Those things don’t come easily. Nigeria is clearly a difficult nation to govern,’’ he said.

Those at the event were former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; Ghali Na’aba, former speaker of the house of representatives; Segun Oni, the party’s deputy national chairman (south), and Timipre Sylva, former Bayelsa state governor.

Nigerian Customs Arrests Notorious Job Seeker Scammer

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has arrested one of Nigeria’s most wantef notorious fraudsters involved in online advertising scams on non-existing vacancies in government agencies, PRNigeria is reporting.
The suspected kingpin, whose real name was given as Abubakar Rilwan, had been declared wanted by some security agencies in the country before his arrest.

A top customs officer stated: “Abubakar Rilwan, who is evidently disabled is one of the principal actors and suspect in a job/auction scam syndicate. Whatever he lacks in physical ability, he makes up for in his exceptional ability to manipulate and swindle his victims.

“He has duped desperate job and auction seekers to the tune of over 20 million naira, sometimes using the services of lawyers.

“In one of his escapades, he collected money from 7 (seven) job seekers in Taraba State, issued them fake appointment letters, and caused them to travel all the way to Bayelsa State for fake training. They got there before realizing they were duped.”

While Mr. Rilwan is currently in the custody of the Nigeria Customs Service undergoing further investigation, other security agencies that had declared him wanted for related offences are waiting to interrogate him.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi confirmed the arrest.
